NICOSIA (Reuters) - Desk jobs are increasing obesity, with many employees and employers ignorant of the risks of sitting down all day, researchers said on Wednesday.

“Obesity is an epidemic, rising at troubling proportions,” said John S. Evans, a senior lecturer at Harvard School of Public Health in the United States.

The School, which cooperates with the Cyprus International Institute for the Environment and Public Health, said a link between obesity and conditions in the workplace was growing.

“As the workplace becomes our second home, our traditional diets have been swapped for fast food that is high in saturates,” said Evans, one of the researchers.

Two billion people worldwide will be overweight by 2015, and more than 700 million will be obese, according to the researchers, whose EU-funded study examined exercise and working habits across the European Union.

“A basic cause of obesity related to the workplace is a lack of awareness of how serious this issue is among employers and employees,” said Athena Linos, an epidemiology lecturer at Athens University. “Factors include work-related stress, overtime and desk-bound jobs.”

The researchers found that 19 percent of Dutch citizens and 31 percent of Irish citizens perform no exercise at work. Fifty-five percent of Greeks and Croatians and 61 percent of French people do no exercise at all, Linos said.

A lack of designated areas for employees to store and eat their food, and a lack of onsite gyms were among the factors increasing obesity, the researchers said.

Researchers said employers should introduce fitness incentives for staff and offer a break from desk-bound routines.

“The word ‘fun’ is the most important word in promoting health in the workplace,” said Finn Berggren, president of the Gerlev P.E. and Sports Academy of Denmark.

Malaysia’s development is at risk of facing a slowdown, as the country is facing shortage of engineers.

Without the proper attention and due courses, the brain drain problem would continue to haunt and eventually cripple the nation’s hope to becoming a center of technology development.

According to the President of Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Prof Datuk Chuah Hean Tei, the country needs about 200,000 engineers by the year 2020. As it stands, there are only about 60,000 qualified engineers in Malaysia at the moment.

Parents are encouraged to instill passion and interest among their children towards the engineering and technology sector so that they would choose engineering as their field of study and career. Apart from competitive remuneration, engineering offers a variety of specialized fields, ranging from mechanical, electrical up to aerospace, biotechnology and micro sciences.

Review on JPA Scholarship

The government plans to make a review on the selection criteria for the JPA scholarship, and fine tune the process to create a better and more transparent awarding system.

Of late, the selection of the JPA scholarship recipients has been a subject of intense criticism with many of the so-called deserving top scorers unable to get their hands on the scholarship. Instead, it was discovered that many of them were bypassed by other students who obtained poorer exam results.

As a consequence, those who gained acceptance in the universities overseas have to forego their dream after failing to secure scholarship for themselves. With only 20% of the scholarship given on merit basis, many realize that a string of As and good extra curricular performance won’t guarantee you the JPA scholarship.

At the moment, the selection is based on 4 criteria; namely merit (20%), race (60%), Sabah & Sarawak (10%) and those from underprivileged group (10%).
