Moms-to-be in Malaysia can now go for their 60-day maternity leave two weeks before the confinement, without having to wait until the due date. The new ruling took effect on 1 May 2009.
Once the 60 days of leave are consumed, they are expected to report to work.
To obtain the approval for the maternity leave, all they need to do is to present a letter by a doctor stating their expected delivery date to their superior.
The new ruling was introduced by the government as part of an effort to improve the benefits and perks to the civil servants. In 1998, a 60-day maternity leave was introduced in place of the existing 48 days to the government employees.
Last year, another ruling that allows mothers to take up unpaid leave for up to five years (for the first five babies) was introduced.
Cuepacs, the union body of the government employees, however, are now pushing the government to increase the number of days in the maternity leave to 84 days. According to Cuepacs president, Omar Osman, the extra days are imperative, especially for those who deliver their babies through caesarian procedure.

Intel Fined for Immoral Tactics
Intel, the world’s largest chip maker, was slapped with a record fine of US$1.45 billion by the European Union (EU) this week after found out to have used immoral and strong-arm sales tactics in the consumer market.
Intel has allegedly been penalizing global PC makers which opted to used the company’s rival chip manufactured by rival AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) to push them to used Intel’s products instead. The chip, or microprocessor, is one of the most important parts behind a computer operation.
By deliberately scaring off the PC makers, Intel would be seem to have edge over other competitors, and would eventually reach a point of monopoly. According to the EU spokesperson, Intel ‘did not compete fairly, frustrated innovation and reduced consumer welfare in the process, and this has greatly harmed millions of consumers in the Europe.’
In Malaysia, both companies have operation in Penang, southern peninsular of Malaysia. However, Intel has a significantly larger presence and is considered one of Penang’s important investors.
The fine by the European Union has turned up a new heat on the regulators in its native country, United States, which is now under pressure to go after Intel too.
Intel and AMD have been locked in a prolonged court battle, with the latter crying foul over Intel’s anticompetitive and monopolistic business strategies.

Retrenchment Fund: Risk Assessment on the Way
The Retrenchment Workers Fund (RWF), which is aimed to help workers laid off from jobs, will become a reality once the risk assessment carried out by the International Labour Organization (ILO) found the implementation viable.
The assessment is expected to finish by the end of year 2009.
According to the Human Resource Minister, Datuk Dr S Subramaniam, once the assessment report is completed, the ministry will forward a proposal to the government on its next course of actions.
The ministry seeks the assistance from the International Labour Organization as the latter possesses the necessary actuarial expertise in evaluating the feasibility of the retrenchment fund.
